Hello everyone -
Need help in the identification of the frame.
Additional photohttp://clip2net.com/pak/m407550/407550-3e8a9aca77
The information that I have:
- Serial number:
152(reversed)
170 4
1446 1(reversed)
- BB 68mm British or Swiss. Is it possible left tread on right cup for French tread? Can French thread was re-cut to British?
- Guess frame was repainted, decals are not varnished.
- Head tube have bcm professional lugs
- Headset 1 inch threaded Zeus BSC(It seems the French thread), Handlebar stem 22mm
- Top tube diameter: ~26.1mm/ Down tube:~28.2mm/Seat tube:~28.2
- Seatpost 25mm-25.4mm
- Dropouts 100/120
This can be Gitane? I would be grateful for any information, idea, advice |

The Bocama lugs and the seat stay tops point to Gitane.
The frame looks like an entry level Gitane track bike from the 1970s. In the US the model name was "Student" while in Europe it was called the "School".
The 25mm to 25.4mm seat post would indicate thick wall carbon steel tubing used on less expensive models.
The bottom bracket is most likely French thread and NO it can't be retapped oversize to British/ISO size.
It could be tapped to take an Italian BB but that's a lot of work plus it would be 2mm narrower than the 70mm wide Italian BB shells plus the wall thickness would be thinner and weaker.
The headset would have 25mm x 1mm threads. BSC or British or Italian steerers are 25.4mm in diameter.
If the headset is 1" x 24TPI (25.4mm x 24TP) then the fork was changed out or something isn't correct.
A BSC headset is going to be too loose on a French steerer.
I bought an old French bike that had a Shimano alloy headset. When I took it apart I found that someone had wrapped Teflon plumbing tape around the metric threads to make up the difference in steerer diameters. |

Thank you for such a quick response.
What about the serial number?
https://www.flickr.com/photos/notautomatt/237349894/in/photostream/
Kinda same serial number?
It's strange, I've refresh the thread and could enable set English BB. Could it be track Gitane with English thread?
Fork diameter 25.1-25.4mm
Where i can find more info about this model(weight, size of tubing etc)
Thank you for your assistance. |

Gitane and a lot of the other French bike manufacturers switched from metric threads to British threads in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
Where did the frame come from (what country)?
I have a 1974 Gitane bike that I assembled with a frame that came from Australia. It has British bottom bracket and steerer threads.
That was 4-5 years before Gitane started using British threads as standards.
BTW, serial numbers stamped into the frames of most European bikes are untraceable.
Any records were lost 20-30 years ago. |
