Recently brought the Gitane back from SW France to UK. It looks like it might be c. 1984 model, but there is no model name on the bike. Can anyone help me with what model/date it may be ? It has Simplex front derailleur and dropout. CLB brakes/sulky levers. Solida cranks. Nervar crankset Pelissier hubs/Mavic rims

That's a tough one. With the cottered crankset and no braze ons along the top tube I can't help it's a 70's model with 84 decals added to it. But then there isn't an 84 French catalog. |

Scott,
You nailed it... partially...
The frame is a 1972 or later Peugeot PR-10 or similar model that's been repainted. Someone added the 1984 Gitane decals!
Why? The Simplex dropouts, the seat stay tops, the fork crown and so on.
The 3 main tubes on PR-10 bikes had butted Reynolds 531 tubes.
It has a mishmash of reasonable quality components except for the steel cottered cranks (which I would switch to Stronglight or similar French cotterless cranks).
It should be a decent riding bike. |
