Just by way of update...and to post something to this forum...I raced my 2006 Carbon last weekend and it went pretty well. I am a leadout man for my club, so I did my job. The bike performed well, and I have no complaints about the ride, the quality, or otherwise. Get lots of compliments on the bike as well, which may be the only Gitane Carbon in all of North America! |

Sandman,
Well, although I probably could survive with my present small group of Gitanes, like you, I am thinking of "doing it again"; i.e. seeing if I can get ahold of a new Gitane Carbone.
I have no information as to the 2008 models, but the premier model for 2007 was the Definitive Gitane Dream G-3 (SRAM Force). Certainly, a D.A. or Record model be nice, but (particularly with my penchant for mid-range Gitanes) this latter model would more than good enough for me. Preliminary inquiry among local dealers seem to indicate a disinclination to order a velo not now being exported to the U.S. My next step might well be to try to go directly to Cycle-Europe in Romilly-Sur-Seine.
I will certainly advise you as to how I make out!

My recommendation would be to go through Jean-Pierre Derrier of Derrier Loisirs. He has sold me three Gitanes, which he has the factory send out to me. Tell him that you spoke with me...what you will do is wire him the money (through your bank), and he will send you the bicycle via TNT shipping. While the exchange rate isn't the greatest right now, Jean Pierre is great and will most probably offer to sell you the bike. His shop is at the base of the Galibier...and the tour and dauphine go right by his shop just about every year.

Stephan,
Well, Jean-Pierre is clearly the way to go here. Thanks much for this information.

The Carbone sounds like a very nice bike. The French website for Gitane / Cycleurope only shows up to an 1800 model with Shimano 105. Is it that these top models are no longer made?
Additionally, did Cycleurope make your Carbone, Sandman?
Do you have a few shots that you could post?
Thanks |

The carbon bicycles are made in Taiwan, not in France. The Machecoul factory, as far as I know, is not set up for it. Gitane now makes a higher end range ("Definitive"), but I believe these are contract-built bikes in Taiwan, not made at the Machecoul factory. Here is a pic of my new carbon gitane:

Ah, great. Thanks very much indeed Sandman. That explains things.
Thank you for posting the shot too. It's a very nice top of the range bike indeed. It looks like a joy to ride and I'm sure it's very responsive with the short looking wheelbase - guessing about 98cm. |
