Hello all!
I was a member of the Yahoo group but this is my first post on the new forum. Good work on the forum and website. What a great resource!
In the process of turning my Interclub into a single speed I managed to drop most of the hub bearings into my lawn. I know, I know, what am doing working on my bike sitting in my backyard (if you saw my basement you would understand)? The more important questions is why didn't I rememeber that it did not have sealed bearings.
Anyway...
I think I found all of the bearings, but can anybody tell me the exact number? Please say 18.
These are the stock Normandy hubs.
Thank you! |

Ooops.
Without knowing the number, as I don't own any normandy hubs, I would say that you should be able to figure it out by packing them and just taking a look if there are any large gaps. If there are, and another bearing would fit easily...then you're missing one!
Replacements should be easily available at your local bike shop, for a nominal charge.
Good luck with the project! |

That is what I was afraid of....
Looks like I am two bearings short.
Thanks!
I'll post some pictures once I am done. |

Hi Bujiwam
Most of the old Normandy hubs were fairly stock, so they should have 10 balls per side in the front and 9 per side in the rear. When servicing a front hub, you should be left with only a small gap between the last two bearings - around 2 mm. With the rear though, the gap is much larger. it's almost large enough to squeeze another bearing in - with "almost" being the operative word. If in doubt, pack it with nine and then hold a loose cone with index finger and thumb. Press it in and spin it around a bit to eat the bearings. Then try to rock it from side to side. Repeat this with ten bearings. It should be obvious which one is correct. Good luck. (And next time use a drop sheet!!!!)
p.s. If you know there's a lost bearing there somewhere, run a large magnet around over the spot where you dropped it. |

Looks like I did not lose any bearings after all.
And I will definitely be using a drop sheet in the future.
Thanks, Paul! |
