What a mess this restoration is (sorry about the offense, if it is anyone here!!!).

The real question is: What the heck is it? My guess: A 1984 Criterium.

The stem is a strange combination with the traditional headset. Not sure how that works unless the fork tube has been extended, replaced, modern forks added, or perhaps a quill stem was sawn off for the attachment to take place.

There is one other possibility: You can buy adapters that will make a "traditional" steerer into the new type for a modern stem. Here is a link:

It has to be something like that adapter. I had no idea they existed. Thanks for the lead. Surely a classic quill would look far more elegant and in keeping with the machine as it actually looks good overall.

That guy just wrecked that bike. I asked him for pictures of the bike before the refinish...maybe it was in such bad shape, that it needed a paint job. But where on earth did he get those decals? Why is the seat tube decal upside down? He should have visited this site before doing it....

I bought one of those for a Cannondale I used to own, as the original quill stem was the wrong size for me, and being a 1 1/4" steerer tube there were no suitable replacements. The threadless headset adapter allowed me to get the bars in a suitable position to ride the bike.
