I Have found this Gitane bike in the basement at work, can you enlighten me as to its pedigree and vintage, frame quality in particular, before I find out who it might or might not belong to and take it into my own hands.

Frame marked, "Modele VITUS Depose" with a frame number I assume above it.
Front and Rear hubs marked, "SUZUE"
Wheels are, MAVIC 700c, "Module E"
Deraileur, HURET SACHS "RIVAL" 12 speed.
Cranks, SUPER MAXY 170mm
Chanirings have, SUGINO bolts, so SUGINO Chainrings??
Pedals stamped, SP-150
Saddle, CONPY
Brake levers, Weinnmann
Brakes, CLB
Stem says, "SR" on it
Chrome fork has little chevron type detail with "G" at the top of fork leg
Only decals on the frame say "GITANE" and "ROAD RUNNER".

Looking forward to finding out more about this.

This bike started out with blue paint, over white primer. The White and grey, along with the Road Runner decal, are a partial repaint.

CLB brakes show up in the 1983 catalog on the Racer 600, a 600c bike intended probably for kids. The other components on this bike are lower quality than the rest of the Road Runner components.

Sachs bought out Huret in 1980, so your bike must be early 80's. Somebody out there can probably say more about the date from the transfers.

In the '84-'85 catalog the Gransport has Rival derailleurs, but the Interclub has Mavic module e rims. Even though your bike must be an earlier year that should give some idea where it would go in the Gitane heirarchy, somewhere near the middle. My guess would lean toward Gransport, because I can't imagine an Interclub coming with the "safety levers," since it was an entry level racing bike, but on the other hand I can't count the freewheel teeth but it looks like close ratios, which would go with a racier bike like the Interclub.

Why don't you clean it up, lube the bearings, and ride it?
