Here's my "74" Gitane, recently restored; Cleaned, new (used) Shimano de-reiler, cables, brakes, quick release rims (had the ole' butterfly nuts on before), and tires. Left Paint original so some wear shows as I've put alot of miles on this bike. Still riding and most times these rides are about 12-15 miles although a friend and I together will usually do a 20 miler.
I bought this bike in "74" as my means of transportation while in the Navy.

Oh yea, handlebar tape is new padded type. great find at an old bike shop. I find my best buys at these old stores. There'a also a bike store in Philly called the bike church where many old style bike parts are available for pennies. My son bought an Astra frame, (also French made in "70's" era), for $35.00
Recently finished restoring that one also. My 19 yr. old went bike riding with me!

Cooltech,
Are those chrome "socks" on the front and rear dropouts for the wheels?
At first I didn't care for Camo/Splash bar tape. Then I tried a black/red on a bike I was doing with red accents (cable, toe straps, pump and fender) and it really added some ZIP! Like you said, it's not expensive, and it's easily changed.
Hummmmm...I thought the Navy used Ships?
If you can post detailed photos that would be great.

HI Jay! I did put some silver paint at the fork ends as they were badly chipped. Hindsight, Maybe I should have left them as they were. I'll do some close ups latter today and try to post by tomorrow.
Yep, the Navy uses ships but they were just too slow on the asphalt

Nice machine Cooltech, and as you've had it since '74 that makes it even better. Don't worry about the wear on the paint, the most important thing is to keep it original and period correct.
A very slightly oily rag works a treat when wiped over areas that one does not wish to paint but keep original to save corrosion.
Thanks for posting
