I'm new to forum / website but not new to Gitane brand. I purchased a used gitane over the weekend for a great price but im not sure of model I believe its a '87 team pro. It has reynolds 531p decal on frame, a columbus decal on forks (?). campy crankset, hubs, brakes, cineli stem & bars. its in great condition. Maybe some one can help me identify exact model
thanks -J.D.
PS- GREAT WEBSITE!!

Welcome to the site and congratulations on your new bike.
It appears that you received a "mix & match" framset: Certainly the frame is a 1987 Team Pro, which used Reynolds 531p. However, the forks are from a 1984 Team Pro, which used Columbus tubing. They 1987 frame is different from the 1984 in that the internal cable routing is run below the top tube, while in 1984, it ran on the top of the top tube (internally...I am talking about the cable exits from the top tube).
The forks are, in fact, 1984...but don't just trust the Columbus sticker. The fork crowns were different on the 1984, and used that kind of "blockier" joint at the bottom of the steerer tube (the area where the steerer and the fork blades meet).
So, either the original forks were damaged and the owner replaced them, or...as is more likely the case, the store or distributor sold it as a mixed frameset. The purchaser then put on the parts (Gitane of that era were never sold with Shimano). Of course, that is just my opinion....
Very nice! (which is not opinion, but rather fact) |

Stephan-
Thanks for reply/ info and kind words about bike. It was a very good find and I am very happy with it. It rides just great!!!
I was thinking of eventually trying to find original style front and rear campagnolo derailures of that era just to make the "fignon replica" complete

Beautiful bike - I love the blue. I have a feeling I'll eventually be on the search for a Team Pro or Super Corsa. Enjoy riding it - I've been on my 84 Sprint the past few days and absolutely love the ride. |

That's a nice looking machine jd. You did very well indeed.
It looks like you have one of the very last Campag Super Record chainsets and they're not that common. The front a rear derailleurs will be very straightforward to find, if a little pricey for the rear. The rear had grey jockey wheels and, I think, no date on the top of the cage.
The bar tape will really set it off. How about the brake cable outers too?
Thanks for posting.
