Found this bike at Goodwill a few days ago and not quite sure what I have on my hands, especially when it comes to the frame. The chrome fork is Columbus. There's also a Columbus decal on the down tube, but part of it is missing. Do I have an all-Columbus frame, or just three main tubes? And what grade of Columbus (I recall there being different grades)? To my eye, it appears to be an early or mid 1980s club racer--no eyelets, braze-ons with internal cable routing, budget Modolo brakes, Simplex derailleurs, six block. It's going to make a fine ride for my wife for less than $100 (needs seat, cage, bar tape, brake hoods and not much else) and will be fun to park next to the tree for Christmas morning.

Welcome to the forum.

Looks like a great bike that will clean up nicely.

It looks to be a 1985 Gitane Performance model. Here's a link to the catalog. The person that wrote the copy wasn't very familiar with bike technology i.e. Spider brakes should be Spiedel brakes - but yours has Modolo brakes. Component changes were the norm.

The components should work quite well when cleaned up, lubed and adjusted.

Chas.

I agree (as always) with Chas. The frame is made from Columbus "Aelle" tubing. Good stuff...and exactly what you thought it was: A club racer.

A caution regarding the Seat Post. It was pointed out to me recently that having the Flutes below the top of the seat tube could allow moisture to penetrate into the tube and create corrosion problems. It may be wise to raise the post or at least remove and add lots of grease.

Nice bike. Be sure to post "After" photos to the Owner Gallery.

Regards,
Jay

Nice bike and colour too. You did very well indeed. Thanks for the post.

Jay, thanks for the tip on the seat post.
