Just seen this article about a great idea. It brings back those wonderful images of Breaking Away, as well as many others from years gone by.
There is a Gitane connection - take a look at the photo accompanying the article.

That's cool. I might just have to look into that a little bit. I get the weirdest looks from some folks riding my steel (it's all I have) when they're on the aluminum and carbon stuff.
I've been thinking a lot about riding the TdF this summer and wishing some of the clubs had a vintage category for their events.

I emailed the group tonight and got the following response regarding my area of the U.S.:
"...We would like very much to put on an event in the Pacific Northwest. The bike culture there is the best in the world. The way to make it happen is to get your friends involved and have them email us that would participate if we came out. 50 people is all it would take. You probably know that many Gitane owners...."
And, I like their mission statement:
"Our mission is to get as many steel frame bikes off the walls, out of the attics and basements and back on the race course where they belong. It's that simple. But where we go from here depends on you and your passion for steel. " |

Scott,
Interesting update, thanks for posting. It sounds like a super idea. All the best with a race in your area and do let us know how it goes if you go ahead.
The L'Eroica ride in Italy has now restricted machines to, I think, 1987 and earlier with no clipless pedals and non aerodynamic brake levers. In the UK there's a new time trial series for steel, or classic, machines (not sure of the exact specs.) that's due to get underway in April.
Nice to see steel on the way back again.
