My '84 Sprint has been on the indoor trainer all winter with a set of cruddy 700X25 Kenda tires. I haven't had a chance to replace the tires with something better but was itching to take the bike out for a good ride. So today I took the wheels off my Bianchi (8 spd rear) and put them on the Gitane. The rear wheel slid right into the dropouts which surprised me a little.
I didn't have time to adjust the hi-lo screws to accomodate the two extra gears so left it as is and hit the road. In well less than a kilometer I realized why I love French bikes so much. This thing is just visceral compared to the Bianchi. Even when fighting the 20 mph wind in the low 42-23 gear it was still fun to ride. Responsive, precise, comfortable - what more could you want? Add the beautiful blue metallic paint in the bright sun and this was a good day.
Just had to share. The new clinchers will be on by next week and the bike will see a lot more road time. I may even try to locate a decent 13-26 7 spd freewheel to put on for these windy days (which we have a lot of). |
