I originally posted this on bike forums, and they advised I post this here also to get your input. I Just got a Gitane Victoire for a very good deal. A major step up from my 1980 Schwinn Traveler III. I really know very little about the brand. Previous owner said it’s from 1986. I was hoping someone could give me some details on this bike. I wasn’t able to find out anything on google. Was it not a popular model? It’s got Weinmann brakes and levers, Sachs Hurret shifters and derailers, mavic 700cc wheels, Malliard hubs
For now my plan is to clean it up, remove the profile bars, throw on some new rubber, and ride the heck out of it. I love the purple and yellow scheme!!! I haven’t ridden it yet. Is this a good Gitane? I plan to ride it recreationally on weekends, and at some local organized rides, 15-30 mile rides, nothing serious. Truthfully I’m a mt biker that just wants to do some road riding to mix things up.

Hi Wrey
Welcome to the victoire club! I have 2 victoires. Please have a look through previous posts for details about your bike. It was a mid-range bike produced in 85 & 86. Also look at the catalogues pages on this site.
Cool bike, enjoy it.
PLEASE NOTE: The black 'Atax' seatpost has a plastic top that is likely to break. Purchase a new seatpost BEFORE you ride this bike!!!!!! The size will be 25.8mm, and you should be able to get one from you LBS pretty cheap.
Cheers, Wisey |

hey Paul...there is that cable guide you need! You still need one of those, or were you able to locate one?
And Wrey...nice bike. It should be perfect for what you want to use it for. |

Here is the finished bike. New bar tape, tires, and a good cleaning and I have a nice rider. Oh yeah, I am currently looking for a replacement seatpost to replace the plastic ATAX. Thanks for the advice!! Cheers!!

nice yellow saddle, tires, housing, tapes & decal matched each other! now you perhaps will look good in either light blue or yellow 100% merino wool jersey. too bad they don't carry yellow stripe on light blue.
